Our dogs love this homemade treat. You can make them any size or shape that works for your fur babies.
The key to making this cookie firm and crunchy is to bake it at a low temperature for a long time. I bake them at 275 degrees for about 50 minutes, and let them cool before you package them up.
No artificial ingredients here! These can have a strong smell when they are baking, so don’t make them when fussy people might show up.
This recipe makes a lot of treats – you can cut it in half, thirds, etc.
Missy’s Homemade Dog Treats –
3.5 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 c. dry milk
2 tsp. cod liver oil (important ingredient!)
1.5 cups bouillon
3 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup bacon grease (or lard, or shortening)
That’s it! I just make mine like peanut butter cookies – roll each one in a ball and flatten them with a fork, like this –
Discriminating dogs may prefer their treats in the shape of bones. You can roll out the dough and use cookie cutters for refined pooches. Bone-shaped cookie cutters can be found at Walmart, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Bass Pro Shops, and other fine locations.That cod liver oil/bacon grease combo really gets their tails wagging!
